Attention youth of all ages throughout North Texas - your help is needed for the largest food drive in Texas History!  Thousands of volunteers are needed to help fight hunger and poverty.  Get involved with the Souper Bowl of Caring Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Food Drive.

Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide, grassroots movement that mobilizes communities, especially youth, to join together to fight hunger and poverty in their communities. On or near Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, 2008, young people from congregations, schools and other organizations are expected to participate in the 2008 Souper Bowl of Caring.

This year, the Souper Bowl of Caring Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Food Drive has partnered with area grocery stores to fight hunger and poverty in our community. On any given day, 1.2 million people in North Central Texas will go without food. The goal is to collect 2 million pounds of food to benefit the North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank that distributes food to 550 relief agencies throughout the North Texas region.

What can you do?  Youth groups are needed on Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3 to help out in designated stores throughout North Texas (Tom Thumb, Albertson's, Kroger and Central Market).  For more information on how you can get involved or to sign up, visit www.souperbowl.org/dfw or visit www.handsonnorthtexas.org.

Semester of Service

Semester of Service is a new, public-private strategy to help young people find their voice, take action, and have impact on the most critical problems facing the world. In January 2008, Youth Service America and the Corporation for National and Community Service are encouraging students, ages 5-25, to develop a 14 week service-learning project that launches on the Martin Luther King Day of Service (January 21, 2008) and culminates on the weekend of Global Youth Service Day (April 25-27, 2008). To learn more, visit http://www.ysa.org/semester.

Read Across AmericaRead Across America

The National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America campaign is the nation's largest reading event.  Initially created in 1998 as a one day event to get kids excited about reading and to celebrate reading on Dr. Seuss' birthday, the program has grown into a nationwide initiative that promotes reading every day.  Each year, the National Education Association awards grants to student-led initiatives through Youth Leaders for Literacy, a joint program of the NEA and Youth Service America (YSA). For a list of grant winners and other project ideas, visit http://www.nea.org/readacross/volunteer/index.html.

How can you get involved?  There are numerous opportunities to promote literacy and help celebrate Read Across America Day on March 3, 2008 - from reading to elementary students to holding a book drive and distributing the books to children at shelters/outreach centers.  For additional ideas and materials on how you can get involved, visit the Read Across America websiteAlso visit the Volunteer Center's online database at www.powercrew.org for a list of agencies that support literacy.

Seasons of Service

MLK DayMLK Day

Make it a day ON, not a day OFF!  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. On January 21, 2008, millions of Americans across the country will once again honor his legacy by taking part in a wide range of service projects-conducting food drives, painting schools and community centers, recruiting mentors for needy youth, and bringing meals to homebound neighbors, to name but a few.

In recognition of the 40th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination, the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2008 is also pleased to join with other organizations in supporting a new initiative, "40 Days of Nonviolence: Building the Beloved Community." Under this initiative, the King Day of Service will kick off 40 days during which families, schools, faith communities, and other organizations will plan service projects and educational activities promoting Dr. King's message of nonviolence and social justice.

What will you do on January 21, 2008 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?  You can join an organized service project in your area or help fill a need yourself-by tutoring a child, helping an elderly neighbor, serving in a homeless shelter, or volunteering at a school or community organization.  There are many ways to find service opportunities in your community and throughout the year.  For more information and resources including project tips, project examples or to find a service project in your area, visit www.mlkday.gov.

Global Youth Service Day
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world. Millions of youth will participate in the 2008 Global Youth Service Day on April 25-27, 2008.   GYSD supports youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement and educates the public, media and elected officials about young people's roles as community leaders. Each year, communities, schools and local organizations develop youth service events around the country. Over the past 14 years, Global Youth Service Day has brought together more than 30 million people in thousands of communities nationwide.

On Global Youth Service Day young people will design and lead service-learning projects in areas ranging from literacy and the environment, to healthcare, hunger and help for the elderly.

Other project ideas:

  • Help cook and/or serve a meal at a homeless shelter
  • Organize a neighborhood group to plant, tend and harvest a vegetable garden
  • Deliver meals to homebound individuals
  • Paint a mural or clean up in a local park
  • Plant flowers in public areas that could use some color

For more information, resources and project ideas, visit www.ysa.org.  Want help developing a project?  Attend the 2008 JBS High School Leadership Conference on February 23, 2008 and design a project to benefit GYSD or contact the Volunteer Center at vpc@powercrew.org.
