Semester
of Service is a new, public-private strategy to
help young people find their voice, take action,
and have impact on the most critical problems
facing the world. In January 2008, Youth Service
America and the Corporation for National and
Community Service are encouraging students, ages
5-25, to develop a 14 week service-learning
project that launches on the Martin Luther King

Read
Across America
The
National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across
America campaign is the nation's largest reading
event. Initially created in 1998 as a one day
event to get kids excited about reading and to
celebrate reading on Dr. Seuss' birthday, the
program has grown into a nationwide initiative that
promotes reading every day. Each year, the
National Education Association awards grants to
student-led initiatives through Youth Leaders for
Literacy, a joint program of the NEA and Youth
Service America (YSA). For a list of grant
winners and other project ideas, visit http://www.nea.org/readacross/volunteer/index.html.
How
can you get involved?
There are numerous opportunities to promote literacy
and help celebrate Read Across America Day on March
3, 2008 - from reading to elementary students to
holding a book drive and distributing the books to
children at shelters/outreach centers. For
additional ideas and materials on how you can get
involved, visit the Read
Across America website. Also
visit the Volunteer Center's online database at www.powercrew.org
for a list of agencies that support literacy.

MLK
Day
Make
it a day ON, not a day OFF! Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. sought to forge the
common ground on which people from all walks of
life could join together to address important
community issues. On January 21, 2008,
millions of Americans across the country will
once again honor his legacy by taking part in a
wide range of service projects-conducting food
drives, painting schools and community centers,
recruiting mentors for needy youth, and bringing
meals to homebound neighbors, to name but a few.
In
recognition of the 40th anniversary of Dr.
King's assassination, the Corporation for
National and Community Service in 2008 is also
pleased to join with other organizations in
supporting a new initiative, "40 Days of
Nonviolence: Building the Beloved Community."
Under this initiative, the King Day of Service
will kick off 40 days during which families,
schools, faith communities, and other
organizations will plan service projects and
educational activities promoting Dr. King's
message of nonviolence and social justice.
What
will you do on January 21, 2008 in honor
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? You
can join an organized service project in your
area or help fill a need yourself-by tutoring a
child, helping an elderly neighbor, serving in a
homeless shelter, or volunteering at a school or
community organization. There
are many ways to find service opportunities in
your community and throughout the year.
For more information and resources
including project tips, project examples or to
find a service project in your area, visit www.mlkday.gov.
